I have used henna for the last five years. It is one of my favorite ayurvedic products for my hair. Henna is a natural plant-based conditioner that strengthens and naturally colors the hair.
If you have darker hair, henna will give your hair a reddish hue. If you have lighter or gray hair, the color change will be brighter and more vibrant.
Since my natural hair color is a mix of black and gray, I color my hair with henna and then with indigo powder. The henna turns my gray hair red, and the indigo turns the reddish tones to black. The result is very dark brown to black hair.
It is important to note that if you want to color gray hair black, you must first use the henna. More about that will come in a future post.
Tsehai’s Henna offered me a photochromic strengthening kit in exchange for my honest review. I rarely accept products to review. However, I visited Tsehai’s Henna website and read about the products and ingredients. I had never seen an entire henna system like this. Given my love for henna, I was excited to try this system.
What are the benefits of henna?
What I love best about henna, is that you can feel the benefit after the first application. It strengthens my hair, which means fewer split ends and hair breakage. Many compare henna to a traditional protein treatment because it strengthens the hair.
Henna is a way to naturally color your hair without chemicals. Results may vary depending on your hair color. Still, it is a great option if you desire a chemical-free hair regimen.
How does Tsehai’s Henna differ from my traditional henna application?
It is an entire system.
Most henna brands sell powdered henna in a bag or box. You are left to decide what shampoo and conditioner will complement and what extra ingredients you should add to the henna. The Tsehai’s Henna kit comes with a moisture shampoo, photochromic henna treatment, deep conditioner, and leave-in conditioner.
This system takes the guesswork out of how to use henna. An entire system also takes away the concern regarding dry hair. Henna can be drying, but the deep conditioner is packed with moisture qualities. My kinky-curly hair was soft, moisturized, and easy to detangle!
There is nothing to mix.
Henna usually comes in a powdered form. The basic henna process consists of adding water until the powdered henna turns to a yogurt-like consistency. To achieve a darker red, you can add coffee or black tea instead of water. You can also add a bit of salt or apple cider vinegar. Since henna can be drying to the hair, many opt to add oil to the henna.
My current henna recipe consists of henna powder, black tea, and apple cider vinegar. Then, you have to allow the henna to sit so the dye can release. I usually let it sit overnight.
With this kit, there is nothing to mix. There is no wait time. After you shampoo your hair, you can towel dry and apply the henna right away. Your hair does not have to be 100% dry.
Tsehai’s Henna rinses out easily.
My normal henna mix takes several rinses to remove it from my hair. Tsehai’s henna rinses out as easily as a shampoo or conditioner. Simply rinse your hair until the water turns clear.
Tsehai’s Henna only takes 35 minutes to process.
This is one of the benefits that I love most. Most henna brands take a minimum of 90 minutes to color the hair. I discovered that it takes closer to two hours for my hair. Sometimes gray hair can be extremely resistant to change. Before, I would have to block out an entire day to henna my hair. Now those days are gone!
After applying the henna, I put on the processing cap included and sat under the dryer for 35 minutes. I saw the same results as if I had left the henna on my hair overnight. And yes, I have done that. I got sleepy.
The kit includes two pairs of gloves and two processing caps.
I love how Tsehai considered the entire process of applying and rinsing out henna. With most henna brands you receive one pair of gloves, maybe. For this reason, I purchased a box of plastic gloves so I will always have another clean pair on hand. You use one pair to apply the henna. After the application, it is nice to dispose of them. They are covered with henna that could stain your skin or clothes. No worries if it does. Henna will fade after some time. With this kit, you have a second pair of clean gloves to use when it is time to rinse the henna from your hair. So thoughtful! You also have a second cap for deep conditioning.
Tsehai’s henna will not drip.
Henna can be messy. On henna-day, I am usually standing in my bathroom with my designated henna towels strewn over the floor. As I mentioned before, it can stain. However, I had faith in the claim that this henna would not drip.
I wore a regular shirt and applied the henna in our family room. I used a liberal amount of henna, and it felt as if it absorbed into my hair! It did not run or clump. Applying henna has never been so easy.
It is photochromic.
Results may vary when it comes to hair color. I appreciate that I did not get bright red results. This is a bonus if you don’t want a dramatic color change. If your hair is dark, you will likely only see a slight color change in the light. This is great if you want the strengthening benefits of henna, without much of a color change.
Tsehai’s henna is infused with botanical extracts.
There are all kinds of henna on the market. I ordinarily purchase henna where Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) is the only ingredient listed. Several brands label their henna as natural when it does have chemical dyes inside. Tsehai’s bottle of henna has water and botanical extracts. Her henna contains green tea and sage. Green tea is known to minimize hair loss. Sage is known for promoting scalp health. This henna is truly lush.
